Joe Gargiulo, Instrumental Music
Most Big Island Jazz fans know Joe Gargiulo as the drummer for the Olliephonic Horns, a Big Band and non-profit organization dedicated to sharing that uniquely American music with anyone who will listen, and which promotes music education for Hawaii’s youth. Mr. Gargiulo studied music at Western Washington University and Pennsylvania State University, and has taught private percussion lessons to a variety of students since 1983. Mr. Gargiulo can also be found playing drums and percussion in a variety of jazz and rock bands, as well as local community theater and chorus productions. He believes, “Music, like mathematics, is a universal language. You can have 10 strangers from 10 different places on Earth playing different instruments on the same stage and be in perfect communication. Music brings people together like no other form of interaction”. He has been a resident of Waimea for a total of 11 years and when not teaching or playing percussion, he works at the summit of Mauna Kea for the W.M. Keck Observatory as a Telescope Support Technician.
