ENGLISH

ENGLISH 9-12, AP LITERATURE/COMPOSITION, AP LANGUAGE/COMPOSITION
Parker School’s comprehensive
approach to literacy includes appreciation for language use across
cultures, time periods, and geographic regions. Students learn effective
communication skills through exploration of fictional and non-fictional
texts, including classic and contemporary works. Courses take students
from the rudiments of grammar through the complexities of literary
analysis with an emphasis on critical thinking and writing.
HISTORY/SOCIAL

SOCIOLOGY
The study of history connects students
to both the past and the future. Explorations of politics, philosophy,
economics, and geography in traditional and non-traditional texts
lead students to a greater understanding of society and culture.
MATHEMATICS

Math is mastered through a sequence
of skills learned in an integrated and challenging program. The
faculty use cooperative learning techniques, direct instruction,
and technology to aid students in logical thinking, numerical manipulation,
and the practical applications of mathematical reasoning in real
life. Students are placed in math courses according to level of
proficiency.
SCIENCE

The science program focuses on hands-on
learning through experimentation. Students develop research skills
in the laboratory and in the field. Science-fair projects and multi-media
presentations allow students opportunities for skill mastery and
community recognition.

SPANISH I - IV
Parker School currently offers four
levels of Spanish language study. Spanish classes use the Total
Physical Response method of language learning to master listening,
speaking, reading, and writing skills.

ARTS /PERFORMING

DRAMA, CHORUS, DANCE, CERAMICS, VISUAL ART, DRAWING
The Parker School fine arts department
uses the Getty Foundation discipline-based art education approach
to teaching fine arts. The academic and studio courses cover art
criticism, history, aesthetics, and process. Course Descriptions: Upper School Fine Arts, Upper School Music
Drama/Chorus/Dance classes, open to all grade levels,
offer opportunities for students to learn the art of performance.
The drama program produces a show each trimester.
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION - 1 CREDIT - 2 CREDITS as of Class of 2010
CONDITIONING, FITNESS, YOGA, BIIF ATHLETICS
Focusing on a healthy lifestyle, the
physical education program teaches individual athletic skills, positive
attitude during competition, teamwork and healthy nutrition.
